Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire
Kenilworth Castle is one of England's magnificent castles and historical sites. The original Castle dated back to around 1120, and gradually developed over the centuries. In the 13th century an outside wall and dam were built to protect it from the then surrounding lake. And from the 15th century the Castle was better known as a palace where visitors would go hunting. Queen Elizabeth I visited the Castle in 1572 and 1575. After the English Civil War the Castle's fortifications were dismantled along with many others around the country. It stood as ruins until 1984 when English Heritage took over the management.
